Subject - SFCC Trophy Presentation Night - Saturday 16th January

Details from our 2009 season fishboard have been collated, and we now know who has won what trophy.
However, all names will be remaining a secret until the night.

As always there will definately be some suprise winners, and along with our special humour awards you can never really be sure of what you may get to take home.

This is always a well supported evening for both fishermen and cruisers in the club, and the more of us that are there on the night the better, obviously.
Dermot Nolan, Cruising Secretary, and John Astill, Fishing Secretary, both put alot of effort into this evening.

Light buffet, after the presentation, will be served.

Russ.

Subject - Whiting Competition 10th October - Results

11 of our members in 7 boats have all just enjoyed yet another fine day on the water, chasing the humble Whiting this time.

A lovely sunny day, coupled with a light westerly wind, meant that a relaxing days fishing was guaranteed. Apparently it seems things were more relaxing for some than others, with "Blue Mist" deploying an anchor and looking for the fish (and other boats too for some reason), to come to them.

Although we don't tend to see too many good specimen Whiting these days, Whiting have been caught from most areas recently, so it was a question of fishing wherever was desirable and then hoping for a decent fish at some point during the day.

Mackerel were noticeably prolific (even a nuisance) in most areas, but a good few Whiting were landed just the same. Dogfish and Gurnards were caught too. However, "Blue Mist" deploying the anchor definately seemed to be the right tactics on the day as they returned with two Whiting over one pound in weight, and it was Mark Fox who took the honours on the day with the best at 1lb 4.6oz.

Last competition now for us this season is the Silver Eel Evening Comp. on Fri 23rd October. More here.

Subject - Mens Bass & Wrasse Competition Sat/Sun 3rd/4th October - Results

Nobody fished on the Saturday due to inclement weather, but there was certainly a keen interest from a good few on the Sunday.
8 boats and 15 were fishing.

Overcast skys and very light wind made for a very comfortable day, with a good few Bass caught too. A number of Wrasse were landed as well, though no big fish came to our boats.

Three 5lb+ Bass were caught on the day, all taken over wrecks, with the biggest to John Hall on "Blue Mist" at 5lb 9oz. A number of inshore fish were also caught but these were only in the 2 - 4lb+ class.

All Ballan Wrasse caught on the day were returned, with only one coming to the scales. This being a fish of 2lb 10.4oz for Kevin Rouse fishing on his own boat "Exeibit" at Straight Point.

Next competition is the Whiting Comp. on Sat 10th (or Sun 11th if it's the better day). More here.

Subject - 50th Anniversary Best Specimen Competition Saturday 19th September -Results

13 boats and 27 anglers were fishing on a warm day with little wind. Excellent conditions for all.

Everyone was trying to find a good specimen of any fish they could catch.
Craig Rich and his wife, Pat, were wreck fishing on 'Blue Mist' with Bass Pollack and Pouting caught, though most of our boats chanced things inshore. A fine mix of fish were caught including Trigger Fish, Garfish, Black Bream, Ballan and Cuckoo Wrasse, Mackerel, Bass, Pollack, Dragonette.

When all were done for the day we had a result that was presented in the evening at the Celebration Party.

However, it later transpired that some fish posted had not actually been weighed-in correctly, resulting in it being necessary to disqualify two entries.
The ammended competition results are shown below.

Next competition is the Men's Bass & Wrasse Weekend. on Sat 3rd / Sun 4th October. More here.

Subject - Black Bream Competition Sunday 13th September -Results

9 boats and 15 anglers were fishing on the day.
The weather was sunny and winds light, though there was a rolling swell.

Boats were trying inshore reefs as well as offshore rough ground marks.
Not too many Bream were caught on the day, but the winning fish, by Lee Pearson "Emily Jane", was a very respectable 1lb 15.2 oz.

Catch of the day though was probably the big Conger of around 60lb that John Hall "Blue Mist" caught on the Tardice rough ground."fishing pictures"

Next competition is the 50th Anniversary Best Specimen Comp. on Sat 19th Sept. More here.

Subject - Ladie's Bass Saturday 5th September -Results

After several weeks of unsettled weather it was nice to get on the water again.
The weather was cloudy and the wind light, making for very pleasant conditions indeed.

4 ladies in 4 boats fished and we were all pretty much together across in Ladram Bay for the day.
Lots of Bass were caught on what was one of those days we would all like to see more often. The average size of the fish was generally on the small side, but this was more than made up for by the numbers caught.
The result was close at the scales, with the winner of this much coveted trophy Gabi Humphries, fishing on her own boat "Courtesy of Exe", with a nice Bass of 3lb 4oz.
Carolyn Whiting, on "Devon Maid", was second with a fish of 3lb 1.4oz.

Next scheduled competition is the Black Bream Comp. on Saturday 12th September, quickly followed by our 50th Anniversary Best Specimen Comp on Saturday 19th Sept. More here.

Subject - Mens Mackerel & Most Species Competition 9th August - Results

It was a hot and sunny day on the water for this double competition. The wind was light too, making conditions tip top for us.
Something like 11 boats and 15 gentlemen were fishing favourite wrecks, rough and inshore marks.
Mackerel were hard to come by for most, but a splendid total of 14 species were caught all told, with the biggest fish of the day a huge Bass of 10lb 6oz caught on a wreck in the morning by John Astill, "J's Pleasure".
The winning Mackerel was a good fish of 1lb 2.25oz caught by Terry Haydon "Megabite" and the Most Species by Lee Pearson "Emily Jane" who caught Pout, Pollack, Ballan Wrasse, Bass, Mackerel, Garfish, Scad, Dogfish and a Tub Gurnard for a total of 9. John Astill and Russell Thompson "Devon Maid" came in as runners up with a very respectable 7 species each.
An evening debrief in the club, with a Chinese bought in, was a really good end to the day.

Next scheduled competition is Mens Bass & Wrasse Weekend on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August. More here.

Subject - Ladies Mackerel & Most Species Competition 25th July - Results

With the forecast promising a light SW breeze and sunny conditions the competition went ahead as planned, on this second time of asking.
5 ladies, in 3 boats, were taking part, which is both more and less than we have seen in the past. More ladies and more boats next time around would likely be manageable.
The object of the day is to try and catch as many different species as you can, regardless of size, but with a good Mackerel the exception.

The morning started well, with pleasant weather indeed. There was a slight residual swell in the bay from the previous days wind, but we had just a light breeze and the sun was shining at least.
"Devon Maid" and "Lively Lady" started the day at the Galicia Wreck, which is always good for a nice variety of fish, and "Our Jack" was trying across at Straight Point.
The Galicia was the place to be though with Kerry Smith and Carolyn Whiting, racking up the species, albeit fairly slowly and requiring keen fishing.
"Our Jack" joined proceedings on the Galicia after stuggling to find much at all on Straight Point.
With other fish in mind "Devon Maid" went searching elsewhere in the early afternoon. The wind had by now noticeably freshened, livening up the sea quite a bit.
By the time the afternoon was drawing to a close the sea state had managed to become quite rough, and entering the Swashway Buoyed Channel on the spring low tide was a bit of a concern. "Devon Maid" and "Lively Lady" both chose to fish on outside, until the turn of the tide, before coming in.
The deteriorating weather was annoying, but the day was still enjoyable. In all 9 different species were recorded, which was really good.

The competition result reflected an excellent effort from the ladies, and was actually rather close in the end;

Linda LeMilliere "Lively Lady" - 2 Species, Pollack and Mackerel.
Becky LeMilliere "Lively Lady" - 2 Species, Pollack and Mackerel - with a best Mackerel of 9oz.
Carolyn Whiting "Devon Maid" - 5 Species, Mackerel, Ballan Wrasse, Pollack, LS Dogfish and Whiting - with a best Mackerel of 8.5oz.
Kerry Smith "Devon Maid" - 6 Species, Cuckoo Wrasse, Pouting, Mackerel, LS Dogfish, Whiting and Pollack - with a best Mackerel of 6oz.
Donna Ashwell "Our Jack" - 7 Species, Ballan Wrasse, Pouting, Mackerel, Pollack, LS Dogfish, Dragonette and Bass - with a best Mackerel of 1lb 0oz.

Thanks, and well done to the Skippers on the day for doing their bit as well, but especially to Sean "Our Jack" for doing all that was necessary to make Donna's day such a good one.

Subject - Exe Regatta Best Specimen Competition 27th June - Results

There has not been a fishing event included in to the Exe Regatta programme before, so it is with thanks to Exe Sailing Club for coming up with the idea.
SFCC along with Exmouth Deep Sea FC were asked to arrange things as part of ESC's organisation of the Regatta for 2009.

It was a nice sunny, though at times breezy, day.
There were 36 competitors and 18 boats signed up to fish this best specimen competition.
Fishing wasn't exactly spectacular but it was a thoroughly enjoyable day just the same. Please see results table below.
The winner Mike Richardson "Eeldo" went home happy with the top prize of £250.00 cash.

Thanks go to all the local sponsors for donating prizes, ESC once again for their suggestion and the excellent Regatta Presentation, and also those who gave their time to help organise things.

Please link to Fishing Pictures to see a couple of pics of the event.

Subject - Conger / Interclub Mackerel Competitions 13th June - Results

A lovely sunny morning saw a good number out on the water for this combined competition.
New for this year was that the Interclub Mackerel against Exmouth Deep Sea FC would be an all day and best specimen event. This meant it could be incorporated with one of our other competitions, which it was hoped might mean increased participation from both clubs.
A social evening involving both clubs traditionally follows the Interclub Mackerel Comp, and this wasn't changed. SFCC hosted the evening this year and we were pleased to see such good support from everyone.
The winning fish was announced at 11.5 oz which was caught on "Vamp" by either Becky or Linda LeMilliere. EDSFC's best was declared at 10 oz.
So a win there for SFCC. Excellent, and well done to everyone who took part!

There was some pain along with the gain though as Linda LeMilliere managed to snag her finger on a mackerel feather. Brother Paul said she was very brave when he cut off the hook eye and pushed it all the way through and out the other side. Unfortunately the hook had to be thrown away.

Result of the SFCC Conger Comp was a win for John Hall "Blue Mist" who landed (and returned), a fine rough ground Conger of 43lb. The fish was weighed on club scales on the water. With conservation in mind this competition is the only one currently when this is considered acceptable.

Not happy with just the Conger John went on to also catch a 22lb Tope (shark family), as well. Tope are so rarely caught in our area these days.
Link to Fishing Pictures to see both of these fish.

Please everyone, try to get a photo of your catches. It all adds to our website fishing picture page, but most importantly perhaps, to the enthusiasm of others.
Capture the image on a moblie phone or a camera, and if you're then having any trouble sending, or e-mailing the result, just talk to me and we'll sort it out.

Subject - Pollack Competition 23rd May - Results

It was a good day on the water for this rescheduled competition, and very well supported too. The sun shone and there was just a light SE wind.
A total of 11 boats and 19 anglers fished mainly on familiar wrecks in our area of Lyme Bay.
A good number of Pollack were caught, but sadly no quality fish were seen through the day.
The winning fish of 4lb 6oz was caught on board "Blue Mist" by Stuart Green.
Please see full results below.
